SPRING-EARLY SUMMER 2006

The world out there is mad, crazy, insane... simply watch the evening news, listen to the radio, strike up a conversation about Dubya or the price of gasoline with a co-worker... you'll see - it's a world about issues, policy, capitalism, terrorism and money. It's about crack-dealers, the inevitable housing market crash, the 401k that no longer exists, it's Democrat versus Republican, it's about not getting old and getting old gracefully and with dignity.

Albeit, there are times I get sucked into the "realm" along with other mere-mortals. BUT... I always try to leave a trail of seeds, a tow-line, a message in a bottle... SOMETHING to bring me back... to the basement, the keyboard, the world I know something about. It is quieter here. Simple.

Lately, however, it has been a little hectic in the pink plastic-coated insulated corner of the unfinished basement. I've been taking on work from around the world lately. In ways, it really is kind of neat… being global. And, I enjoy meeting (well, talking on the phone and exchanging emails) with such a variety of folks - from corporate mega-guys/gals to small business start-ups. Folks from Florida to Ecuador, Nova Scotia to England. Chances are it's not a good idea for them to say where their web sites are really made, or what it really cost. Everything works great, looks great... why bother rocking the boat? I try my best not to come across as something I am not. What people do with the information (and work) they get… that's their story. I, in all un-modesty, enjoy the attention or at least knowing that I was a part of it.

An important part of the work I do is somehow ingrained in a zen-thing, or a willingness to take the time to explore some possibilities. I'll probably never become wealthy doing this sort of work, or at least not at the pace I do it.

As a designer one of the cruelest realities is the open white page. It's not unlike being a writer or an artist with a canvas. My own trademarks are simplicity and a clearness of intent designed into pages. It is amazing how very complex that can be at times. It is equally gratifying when a page actually achieves it's intended goal.
